For most tribute bands I believe this business begins simply with
a love and appreciation of the music and artists for which they
respectively portray. In my humble opinion it must be this way to
deliver the passion for the music be it any genre. The 9 months of
rehearsals, part sorting, listening, and studying in my hot garage
with now 3 of my best friends is easily justified every time we walk out on stage and perform together. For
me, the reward is the satisfaction of knowing that we are keeping the
music of The Beach Boys alive along with sharing a common care for the
preservation and continued awareness of the greatest music ever written in pop history.
Over the past 5 years we have been lucky enough to become a part of
The Wilson/Jardine/Marks family and many many friends of The
Beach Boys an American legend. At no time has there ever been
anything other then a complete open-arm welcome into a family of kindness, love, devotion and
spirit. Not without pain and hardship does this come however, and
that story has been told.
Very few (if any) tribute performers have ever had an opportunity to
perform for the original artists for which they portray.
On Friday
May 20th 2005 The Beach Toys had the true honor and privilege to
perform for Brian Wilson, Al Jardine, David Marks, The Beach Boys’
families, respective bands and many wonderful friends. There was
so much talent in the room as our audience it was to say the least a
bit intimidating. For us there were two ice
breakers that I would like to share with you: The first was when
Brian’s cute little daughter stood before us (and we all know kids
just don’t hold back) looking up and said “hey you guys look
like my daddy did in the olden days” Instantly, the hours, days
and months of hard work were validated. The second was when we
observed Brian busy with fans, reporters, autographs (seated only 15 feet from us in the front
row) and photos not missing a beat and singing along with us
while we performed his music. AWESOME, AWESOME AND AWESOME AGAIN. It doesn’t
get any better than that !!! Oh we made a few mistakes that were to be expected given
the situation but somehow the idea and message that we have been
carrying for years now had been sent.
We were honored to have The Honey’s join us in “Be
True To Your School” with the single release cheerleader cheers
added for that recreation of one of one of my favorite single
releases…. Simply unbelievable. To describe the way I feel about
that special day could take pages of this site, but for the sake of space I
will keep it short. Many thanks to the wonderful music of
The
Beach Boys, Alan and Adam, their talented band, Probyn Gregory
for
joining all of us on "Dance, Dance, Dance" and The Brian Wilson band,
The Honeys and all, for their wonderful complements of our
performance.
A special thanks to Harry Jarnigan (the man that started this
all) and his lovely wife Ann, Paula Bondi-Springer, Jeff Foskett,
Probyn Gregory (for his endless support) Trish, Hawthorne Parks and Recreation
Dept. Fred Vail, Jim (our
sponsor from Thalia Surf) for the great Woody Ride to and from the
dedication, and everyone involved for making May 20th 2005 A
day in my life I will never forget……
